Fill with Gemini in Google Sheets now cites a web source in every cell it fills

Google announced on 28 October 2026 that the AI function in Google Sheets now shows the web sources it used inside each cell it fills. One request can now cover up to 3,000 cells. For sales teams that research account lists in Sheets, every AI answer can now be checked against its source.

What Google announced

Fill with Gemini uses the AI function in Google Sheets to write values into many cells at once, for example a short summary or a category for each row. When Gemini draws on the web, each cell now lists the exact sources it used. The citations are available in Sheets on the web.

Google also says processing is faster and more consistent from one cell to the next, and that one request can now handle up to 3,000 cells. Google claims the tool is up to 55 times faster than manual entry on a 500 cell task, based on its own internal study with 95 participants.

The feature is on by default for users who already have Gemini in Sheets. A gradual rollout of up to 15 days began on 20 October 2026 for Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains.

What it means for B2B sales teams

Many sales teams already use spreadsheets to enrich target lists: industry, size, recent news, likely tech stack. The weak point of AI enrichment has been trust. A plausible but wrong fact about a prospect damages a first email more than no fact at all. A source next to each cell makes checking fast and lets a manager spot weak data before it reaches outreach.

Limits remain. A citation shows where an answer came from, not that it is correct or current. The speed figure is Google's own claim. For teams in the EU, enriching lists with facts about named people still falls under GDPR, so the legal basis and the source of the data should be clear before the sheet feeds a sequence.

What to do now

  • Check that your Workspace plan is on the list and that Gemini in Sheets is enabled for the sales team.
  • Run Fill with Gemini on a sample of 50 accounts and open the cited sources for a sample of cells before trusting the full list.
  • Keep enrichment to company level facts where you can, and record the source column when data about people is involved.
  • Decide which fields really change your message before filling 3,000 cells; our lead generation work starts from that short list.
