How AI Is Changing IT Sales Jobs: SDR Skills, Metrics and Careers

AI now does much of an SDR's research and first drafts. What changes in the daily work, which metrics and skills matter in 2026, and where an SDR career leads next.

If you hire or manage SDRs in an IT or SaaS company, you have probably asked how AI is changing sales jobs, and whether the SDR role still has a future. The short answer from the 2026 data: the role is not disappearing, but the work inside it is changing fast.

Research, list building and first drafts are moving to software; conversations, judgement and qualification stay with people. Below: today's SDR benchmarks, the daily changes, new metrics, the skills worth building and where the career leads now.

Will AI replace SDRs? The future of the SDR role

Not in most B2B sales, on current evidence. AI takes over tasks inside the job, mostly the ones SDRs enjoy least.

Salesforce's 2026 State of Sales report, a survey of more than 4,000 sales professionals in 22 countries, found that 54% of sellers have used AI agents and nearly 9 in 10 plan to by 2027. Once agents are fully in place, sellers expect them to cut prospect research time by 34% and email drafting by 36%. Those are expectations, not measured results.

Fully automated SDR teams are still rare. In The Bridge Group's 2025 SDR report, covering 351 B2B companies, AI SDRs appeared as a separate category for the first time, at just 1% of respondents.

Buyers still want a person in the loop. In Gartner's May 2026 survey of 645 B2B buyers, 69% prefer to validate AI-generated insights with sales reps, while 67% prefer a rep-free buying experience. Fewer conversations, each carrying more weight, call for better SDRs rather than more of them.

SDR benchmarks: ramp time, tenure, quota and pay

The role was under strain before AI arrived. These are the headline figures from The Bridge Group's 2025 report:

Measure2025 benchmarkWhat it means
Ramp time3.0 months on averageA full quarter before a new SDR is productive
Tenure1.9 years on averageMany SDRs leave the seat within two years
Annual attrition40% medianA large part of the team changes every year
SDRs at quota60%The lowest share in the study's history
On-target earningsUSD 80,000 median (55,000 base, 25,000 variable)Unchanged since 2022
Daily activity112 activities, 4.1 quality conversationsMost touches never become a conversation

The sample is mostly North American B2B SaaS, so European salaries run lower. The report suggests the short ramp may reflect AI-powered onboarding or tighter management expectations.

Time is the other problem. In Salesforce's 2026 research the average seller spends 40% of their time selling and Gen Z reps just 35%, losing about two hours a week to manual data entry. Salesforce says this admin burden hits the lower rungs of the career ladder hardest, which is where SDRs sit.

How AI is changing the SDR role day to day

The shift is from producing activity to directing and checking it. This is what moves to software first:

  • Account research. Turning a company's website, news and job posts into one reason to reach out, where sellers expect the 34% saving.
  • List building and enrichment. Finding contacts that fit the ideal customer profile and filling gaps in their data.
  • First drafts. A first email or LinkedIn message per account for a person to sharpen, the expected 36% saving.
  • Notes and CRM updates. Call summaries and field updates, the data entry that eats junior reps' hours.
  • The long tail of leads. Salesforce says its own agents contacted 130,000 untouched leads in four months and created 3,200 opportunities: a vendor's own claim, but a clear picture of where agents fit.

What stays with the SDR is every decision: which accounts matter, whether a draft fits the buyer, how to answer pushback and whether a meeting deserves an account executive's hour. Live calls stay human too; nearly half of the reps in Salesforce's survey named cold calling the worst part of their job, so people who do it well gain value.

Some work is new: checking AI output, keeping prompts and the playbook current, and keeping CRM data clean. Adam Alfano, Salesforce's EVP of Sales, warns that stand-alone agents without full customer context tend to fail. Which SDR metrics matter when AI does the sending?

Measure outcomes, not activity. When software can send a thousand emails a day, activity counts say little about the rep.

Volume was a weak signal even before AI: an analysis of more than 28 million cold emails published by Gong found that the average rep has to send 344 cold emails to land one meeting. Bridge Group reports a global median SDR quota of 10 held meetings a month. Track these numbers instead:

MetricWhat it tells youWarning sign
Qualified meetings heldReal output, counted after the meetingBooked meetings that never happen
Meeting to opportunity rateWhether meetings are worth an AE's timeAEs reject SDR meetings
Reply rate by segmentWhether list and message fit the buyerWell below the 3.43% benchmark average
First-email reply shareQuality of the first touchReplies only after long sequences
Spam complaint rateHealth of your sending domainsAbove 0.1% of messages
Pipeline sourced per SDRValue created, not volumeMeetings outside the ICP

The benchmarks come from Instantly's Cold Email Benchmark Report 2026: an average reply rate of 3.43%, 5.5% or more for the top quartile and 10.7% or more for the top 10%, with 58% of replies coming from the first email. Google's email sender guidelines ask senders to keep the user-reported spam rate below 0.1% and never reach 0.3%. They cover personal Gmail accounts, but make a sensible floor for B2B too.

Add two internal checks: how often a person rewrites the AI draft, and how often the AE accepts the meeting. See B2B sales metrics that predict revenue for the full dashboard, and why cold emails go to spam if replies drop.

What skills do SDRs need in an AI sales team?

Judgement now matters more than production. The SDRs who thrive with AI spot bad output, then hold a real conversation:

  • Account judgement. Knowing the ideal customer profile well enough to reject half of an AI-built list, and say why.
  • Editing. Turning a generic draft into a message one buyer would answer; most replies come from the first email, so this matters most.
  • Live conversation. Calls, objections and short discovery, the part buyers still want from a person.
  • Data discipline. Clean CRM records. Salesforce found that 79% of high performers prioritise data hygiene, against 54% of underperformers.
  • AI tool fluency. Clear instructions, fact checks and knowing what a tool must never do alone.
  • Compliance basics. When outreach is lawful under the GDPR, where national email rules are stricter and when AI use must be disclosed.

Training pays. In a Gartner survey of 227 chief sales officers, organisations that prioritise upskilling sellers on AI were 2.4 times more likely to achieve strong revenue growth. The Bridge Group's 2026 AE research found 57% of reps at quota in companies in the top third for AI engagement, against 39% in the bottom third, while stressing this is observational, not proof of cause.

In the EU, Article 4 of the AI Act, applicable since 2 February 2025 and amended in July 2026, requires providers and deployers of AI systems to take measures to support the AI literacy of their staff. Our guide to essential sales skills covers the wider skill set, and IT sales training is how we help teams build it.

SDR career path: where can an SDR go next?

The step from SDR to account executive still exists, but it is narrower and slower. Bridge Group splits the 40% median SDR attrition into 16% promotions, 13% involuntary and 11% voluntary exits, and promotions have halved since 2020, when they were 34%.

The next rung is also higher. In the 2026 AE research, based on 158 B2B companies, employers ask for 3.7 years of experience on average for an account executive hire, up from 2.7 years in 2022, and new AEs take 6.2 months to ramp. Median AE on-target earnings are USD 200,000, but only 48% of AEs reached their annual quota.

It matters to the people in the seat: Salesforce found Gen Z sellers more open to leaving their job than any other generation, mainly for lack of advancement. Realistic next steps:

PathWhat it builds onWhat to add first
Account executiveMeetings you booked and their discoveryFull discovery, demos, multi-stakeholder deals
SDR team lead or managerThe playbook and helping peersCall coaching, hiring, forecasting
Sales or revenue operationsData discipline and AI tool setupCRM administration, reporting, automation
Account management or customer successRelationships and reliable follow-upProduct depth, renewals, expansion
PartnershipsAccount research and outreachPartner programmes and co-selling

Whichever path you choose, keep evidence: meetings that became opportunities, messages that worked and what your experiments taught you. Leadership pays too: median SDR manager on-target earnings are USD 146,000 in Bridge Group's data.

How should sales leaders manage SDRs who use AI?

Redesign the role around judgement, then hire, pay and coach for it. A new tool on an old job description changes little.

  • Hire for thinking and talking. Test account research, a written first message and a short mock call, not email volume.
  • Pay for outcomes. Tie the variable part, about USD 25,000 of the median USD 80,000 package, to qualified meetings held and pipeline.
  • Coach with what you record. Salesforce found that 46% of Gen Z reps rarely get feedback on their sales conversations and 47% do not get enough roleplay before customer calls, yet HubSpot's 2026 State of Sales research says 75% of sales leaders use AI-powered call recording. The coaching material usually exists.
  • Keep AI that talks to prospects transparent. From 2 August 2026, Article 50 of the EU AI Act requires providers to design AI systems that interact directly with people so those people are told they are dealing with AI, unless that is obvious. See what the EU AI Act changed for sales teams and check your setup with counsel.
  • Decide what to build or buy. If you need meetings before a new hire could ramp, compare an AI SDR with an outsourced team and outsourced sales with an in-house SDR.

Frequently asked questions

Is SDR still a good career in 2026?

Yes, if you treat it as training in judgement rather than volume. Median SDR on-target earnings are USD 80,000 in Bridge Group's data, and account executive roles pay far more. But promotions have halved since 2020 and AE hiring asks for 3.7 years of experience on average, so plan your next step early and keep proof of results.

How long does it take to ramp a new SDR?

About three months. The Bridge Group's 2025 report puts the average SDR ramp at 3.0 months, the lowest since 2010, possibly helped by AI-powered onboarding. Account executives take 6.2 months in its 2026 AE research. Treat a new SDR's first quarter as training, with weekly targets for held meetings rather than activity.

How do you measure an SDR who uses AI?

Measure what happens after the send: qualified meetings held, the share that become opportunities, reply rate by segment and the spam complaint rate, which Google asks senders to keep below 0.1%. Activity counts matter less, because software inflates them. Instantly's 2026 benchmark puts the average cold email reply rate at 3.43%, a useful reference per segment.

Do prospects have to be told that AI wrote an SDR's email?

Article 50 of the EU AI Act, applicable from 2 August 2026, targets AI systems that interact directly with people, such as chatbots, voice agents and bots that answer replies on their own. An email an SDR reviews and sends personally is a less clear case, so ask your counsel. Data protection and national email rules apply either way.
